  Course Description :
 

Required of all first-year family social science students (orientation to graduate program); not open to other students.

  Course Objectives / Goals:
 

The purpose of this seminar is to orient new students in the graduate program in Family Social Science. In a setting of open discussion and questioning, students will obtain an introduction to the department, the field of family science, the academic setting, the ethical conduct of research, and role expectations of family science professionals. Students will be introduced to people, processes, and tools that will help them through the graduate program. Sessions will follow a seminar format involving active participation in weekly discussions by the entire group. There will be no tests or major papers, but occasional assignments; students will take leadership for coordinating weekly discussions.

At least 3 hours per week, including class time

  Current edition of the American Psychological Association Handbook.
